Contemporary Portrait Artist

Michaela O Connell is a contemporary portrait artist from County Waterford. She completed her B.A. in Fine Art (Painting) in Limerick School of Art and Design in 2013.

Since then Michaela has shown work in various galleries around Ireland, including a solo show in The Marketplace Gallery, Armagh in 2016 and most recently in The Courthouse Gallery, Clare.

Michaela’s work is inspired by the solitude of one’s inner world, connections, intimacy, and the subconscious. Through her paintings she offers the viewer a mirror to reflect their own inner world. There is often a stillness to the work which is emphasized through a muted, earthy palette and soft facial expressions that gaze back at the viewer.

Although Michaela predominantly works with oils, she also likes to create more playful works in a range of materials, these can vary from still life nudes to nature and animals.

“When you buy something from an artist, you’re buying more than an object. You are buying hundreds of hours of errors and experimentation. You’re buying years of frustration and moments of pure joy. You’re not buying just one thing, you are buying a piece of a heart, a piece of a soul. A small piece of someone else’s life.”

Absolutely love the painting I received Michaela! The detail in it is incredible...even down to the little curls in my daughters hair.

I sent Michaela a photo and asked could she paint a picture of it for my husband's birthday present. Michaela asked me a few questions and within two weeks she sent me a photo of what she had done, when I received the picture it was amazing. The likeness to my husband was fantastic. She is a very talented artist, whom I would wholeheartedly recommend to anyone .

As a surprise gift for my wife I asked Michaela to paint a water colour of our dog Baxter having previously seen her work at a friends house. Michaela was very thoughtful and responsive in choosing an image which really brought out his character initially. During the process Michaela ensured I was aware of progress, sending me images to ensure I was going to be happy with the final product. When the painting arrived with me I was really happy with it, it really captured Baxter beautifully. When I gave it to my wife on Christmas morning so was absolutely delighted and is really a prized possession of her's now. Michaela has a gift to not only choose an image (from many) that best captured his character she can also transmit that so well into art, I could not recommend her highly enough.
